We understand babies skin, because we listen to real mums. And with their insights we've made sure our range gives you all the help you need to get your little one's soft skin used to life in the outside world.

  1. KNOW YOUR BABY'S SKIN

DISCOVER WHY BABY’S SKIN IS DIFFERENT

Even the softest adult skin isn’t as soft as a baby’s skin. Take a look at the diagrams below demonstrating six little differences between baby and adult skin. The structure of a baby’s skin means it's much thinner and more permeable than an adult’s so it might be damaged more easily and irritants may be able to penetrate more easily . So read on to see why you need to take extra care to keep baby’s skin safe, and put your mind at ease too.

MOISTURE ABSORPTION
Baby skin absorbs and loses moisture a lot more quickly than
grown ups.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL
Babies can’t regulate their body temperature as easily as adults and can be more vunerable to rashes.

SUPER HEALING
Thankfully though, your baby's skin has amazing super-fast
healing properties compared to grown ups.

THINNER SKIN
The outer layer of babies skin is 20-30% thinner, making it a lot
less resilient to temperature changes.

INFECTIONS
Infant immune systems and skin barriers are a lot weaker than adults, so they can easily pick up infections.

FRICTION
Because your baby’s skin is thinner, it can be more easily damaged by friction from clothing, allowing irritants to penetrate.

Now learn more about your baby’s amazing skin.

Head To Toe Wash

CHOSEN BY THE EXPERTS

Your baby’s skin is incredibly delicate, so it’s important to use a gentle wash, particularly in the early days. 98% of midwives use our Ultra Mild Head To Toe Wash. The handy pump makes it easy to use, as well as kind to precious skin.

Skin Tone

It takes some babies up to six months to acquire their true skin tone. As their circulation adapts to life in the outside world it can give even dark skinned babies a red / purple colour.

Note: If you’re concerned about your baby’s skin you should contact a healthcare professional.

BATHING DO'S AND DONT'S

Bath time is fun but it's important to get in to a good skincare routine if you want to keep them free from irritation. Here are a few do's and don'ts you should remember when you're reaching for the rubber ducks.

Use your products in small, sparing quantities if your baby has dry skin.

Try especially gentle products like our Ultra Mild Head to Toe Wash, or our Emollient Bath Wash on very troublesome skin.

Take the elbow test to check the temperature of bath water.

Bath them too often. 2-3 times a week should be plenty.

Bathe them for too long - anything over 5 minutes will mean they begin to lose moisture from their skin.

Overheat the water, try always keep the temperature below 37 degrees C.

  1. WE UNDERSTAND SENSITIVE SKIN

WHAT TRIGGERS SENSITIVE SKIN?

If your little one starts to suffer with sensitive skin there could be a number of reasons why. While some triggers will be obvious others might be completely invisible, so the more you know the easier it is to take the mystery out of the sensitive skin and keep their soft skin safe.

ALLERGENS

Reactions can be caused by allergies, for example something they've touched, eaten or perhaps inhaled.

CAN BE GENETIC

A flare up may simply be occuring due to a genetic predisposition, with no external factors at all.

IRRITANTS

Irritants and chemicals in soap and detergents can easily be passed on to your baby, either directly or through their clothes or contact with other people.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Different weather conditions can play havoc with baby's skin. Cold and dry conditions can remove natural skin moisture, leaving baby with dry and irritable skin.

HELP PROTECT SENSITIVE SKIN

Prevention, as they say, is definitely better than cure. Especially when it comes to brand new skin still getting used to life outside the safety of mum. So these simple tips show you the best way to keep your baby's sensitive skin at arms length.

  • Limit bath times - a short bath 3 times a week is plenty
  • Pat don't rub - gently pat them dry with a soft towel.
  • Keep cool - keep your heating low to stop their skin drying out.
  • Cover up on cold days - with soft woollen hats and gloves.
  • Change your washing powder - to one formulated just for babies.
  • Moisturise straight from the bath - and top up every 12 hours.
  • Buy a humidifier - to help moisturise their skin from the air.
  • Stay hydrated - Help hydration with regular feeds.

Sleep Routine

Struggling with sensitive skin? Try our emollient range and avoid the cycle of troublesome sensitive skin. If you are struggling with sleep because of this why not try our Sleep Tight range?

THE BENEFITS OF MOISTURISERS AND EMOLLIENTS

MOISTURISERS

Moisturisers are a great way to keep skin hydrated and are most effective when they're used on a daily basis. Try our Ultra Mild Baby Lotion.

EMOLLIENTS

Emollients are brilliant for keeping skin smooth. They are often used to help very dry and sensitive skin. They help reduce water loss from skin by covering it with a perspective film and so help to prevent sensitive skin in the future. Try our Emollient Body Cream.

Emma’s tips for sensitive skin:
I have always used warm water with a spot of Mum and Me product. A little goes a very long way so you don't need much. I have always tested a product first on a particular spot on baby's side to make sure he doesn’t react to it.
Lindsay’s tips for sensitive skin:
Last month I tried out your sensitive skin range and I've got to say I am extremely impressed! I was very dubious using it in Frankie’s bath at first as we have tried the usual brands and they were too strong for her and by the following day she had angry red patches all over her skin.
